Wrap up

This event is raise funds for the Dinos Baseball Club. The UofC Baseball Program is set-up to assist us in our ambition to go to College or University and play competitive college baseball. The Dinos program was accepted as the fifth team in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball

Conference (CCBC) in the spring of 2004. The CCBC is Canada’s premiere college baseball conference which has established itself and become a well-respected conference for Canadian athletes to begin their college careers.

Since the program was started in the fall of 2000 the program has strived to achieve not only success on the field, but also off the field as well. In order for me to be able to play for the Dinos I must be a full-time student and maintain a high academic standard. We attend UofC and have practice daily. The University of Calgary Dinos Baseball Club is a member of the Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC). The CCBC is a 5 team Canadian College Conference which includes the Prairie Baseball Academy (Lethbridge, AB), Thompson Rivers University (Kamloops, BC), VIBI (Malaspina, BC), Okanagan College (Kelowna, BC) and the UofC Dinos. Our program competes in both a fall and spring wood bat season of on average 80 games during the school year. The fall exhibition season begins early September and is completed at the end of November. The spring conference season begins the first week back to school in January and ends with the CCBC Championship during the middle of May. This year our season starts with 3 weekend trips to Washington State. We play our home games out of Foothills Stadium, the former home of the Professional Calgary Vipers. In the winter we spend our time working out and practicing indoors at the Absolute Baseball Academy.

The University of Calgary Baseball Club raises funds in order to sustain itself in many different ways. The local private sector has been very supportive with donations. We run baseball camps for the local youth players and have an annual banquet. Dinos players are learning there is much more to a baseball program than practicing and playing games.

Bantam Wins Best of the West

The 15u team rolled into Kamloops over the weekend to compete for the Best of the West AAA Bantam Division Championship!

After dropping a tough first game to Okotoks 6-1 on Friday morning, the team bounced back with a 5-0 victory over the Richmond Chuckers lead by Marcus Coderre throwing 6 shut-out innings on the mound.  On Saturday, the ABA boys needed to beat the Okanagan A's to play in the semifinals on Sunday and they gutted through the back and forth game with them winning 9-8.  Ben Prediger and Ethan Sherwood both had 3 hits in the game and Koen McChristie added a couple hits and runs scored.  In the semifinals, ABA faced the number one seeded Okotoks Dawgs in a rematch from Friday.  After going down 3-0 early, the team battled back to tie the game 3-3 and in the 7th inning exploded for 4 runs to eventually win the game 7-4.  Jared Eifler threw a complete game highlighted by a called third strike to end it and send ABA into the finals to face Asahi Baseball from Vancouver, BC.

In the finals, ABA fell behind 4-0 but ralled for 10 unanswered runs to lead 10-4.  Sherwood had two more hits as well as Prediger to pace the offence.  Brendan Loeppky got the win, throwing 4 innings while Riley Ruud and Andrew McCann finished off the game to win 10-6 and be named Champions.  With the Championship,  ABA qualifies for the Best of the West Tournament that happens in April 2016 that features all of the best teams in Western Canada and kick off the 2016 baseball season.

Congratulations again to ABA for winning the tournament!!

Great times @ ABA Spring Break Destinations

Several ABA teams headed down to Florida and Phoenix this past March 2015 to play in some very competitive tournaments and enjoy various amazing expereinces.  Here's a recap...

Florida- The ABA 18u team battled through injuries and the heat of Florida to win 4 games while down there.  Kevin Floyd and Owen Steele both hit over .400 while down there to lead the offence while Grady James led the pitching staff with two complete game wins.  While not playing, the young players stayed on St. Pete Beach and enjoyed the beach and ocean playing volleyball, football, and relaxing at the pool. They also took in a Toronto Blue Jay spring training game with the Jays winning 3-1, highlighted by a Russell Martin Home run.

Phoenix 14u- The 14u team played well down in Phoenix winning the exhibition game on Friday night vs Team Nutty Buddy.  During the tournament, they continued their stellar play but narrowly lost 9-6 in game 1 before tying 8-8 in game 2.  Their play-off game saw them go down 6-0 early but battled back to get the tying run at 1st base in the 7th inning before the last out was made and they lost 11-9.  Josh Oelhaupl paced the team on the mound with 4 scoreless innings in relief and Jack Wilson and Marcus Coderre led the offence while down there as well.

Phoenix 13u- The 13u team played at the beautiful Big League Dreams in Gilbert, AZ during their tournament in Phoenix.  After a successful exhibition game, the 13u team were brought back to reality in Game 1 of the tournament with a rough loss to a local Arizona team.  However, the players bounced back in game 2 to win 11-7 over the Grinders in Arizona to be 1-1 and a good seed for the play-off round the next day.  Unfortunately, the next day the 13u team's hopes were dashed with a tough 10-0 loss in the play-off round to eliminate them from the tournament and end their time in Phoenix.  Tyson Barton led the offence with 7 hits in the tournament and got a save in the win in game 2 for the boys.

Phoenix 12u- The 12u team played in Peoria, AZ at the Pioneer Park Sports Complex for their tournament in March.  After a great game on Friday night vs the AZ Grinders which saw them lose 4-3 in 9 innings, the team was shown why baseball in the US is so good.  The team played well but was just behind due to the amount of games the other teams have played compared to the Canadian teams.  In the final game, the 12u's were in a great battle of 1-0 after 3 innings but a 7 run 4th put the game out of reach for the young squad and they couldn't recover from it.  Hunter Wrigley was named MVP of the tournament for the team down there after throwing 5 innings, leading the pitching staff.

Phoenix 11u-  The 11u team also played at the Pioneer Park Sports Complex in Peoria this past March.  The young team comprised of a couple of first year players as well as an 8 and 9 year old had a great experience down there.  Although they were defeated in all their contests, they learned a lot about the game and learned how to train moving forward to play the teams that are down there in the US.  They also attended a spring training game for the 2014 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants and got to touch and take pictures with the World Series Trophy while there.  Nicholas Krochak was named MVP after leading the team in all categories down there.

Because of his success and hard work to get himself ready for the upcoming 2015 summer season, it was no surprise that he won this award.   In March, Ben will be travelling with the Midget team to Florida to participate in the Russ Matt Invitational and will be catching as well as playing 2nd base.  Congratulations to Ben on all his hard work and continued training in winning the ABA Performance Program Player of the Month of January 2015!

ABA Player signs with Brescia University

Kryan Weemaels officially signs with Brescia University!

The 6'1 right-handed pitcher signed with NAIA Brescia University in Kentucky over the winter break, making him the first ABA player signed for the 2015-2016 College Baseball Season.  Kryan has been with the ABA Performance Program for the past two years and has grown into a great pitcher for the team.  His first year with the program saw him throw many quality games for the Midget Team as well as finishing off the season with a no hitter in Florida.  This year saw Kryan evolve into the ace of the staff and will lead the ABA Midget Team into battle again one more time in March when they head to Florida for Spring Training.  Kryan also is a member of the Belgian National Team that will be playing in International Tournaments, in the summer of 2015, before reporting to Kentucky in August for College.  Congratulations to Kryan on the signing.

ABA Player(s) of the Month, Daniel Gonzalez and Brandon Green

The ABA Player(s) of the Month for December have been awarded to Daniel Gonzalez and Brandon Green.

ABA Performance Program Co-Player of the Month of December goes to Daniel Gonzalez!  Daniel, 12, is an infielder who helped lead the Pee Wee Team during the Fall Ball Season to numerous victories not only on the mound but in the field as well.  Daniel has trained and improved beyond the expectations of everyone in the program that in December, he was promoted to the Bantam Team to challenge his baseball skills.  Instead of being overwhelmed, Daniel pushed himself and has become a great player in the Bantam group.  To this, the ABA Performance Program has awarded Daniel with the Player of the Month for December 2014!  Congratulations Daniel.

ABA Performance Program Co-Player of the Month of December goes to Brandon Green!  Brandon, 12, joined the Pee Wee program in October and hasn't looked back.  He always has a smile on his face and takes the training the coaches give him and really works on his skills.  Because of this, Brandon, has improved tremendously as a player and is getting ready for Phoenix and the start of his 2015 baseball season.  Also, Brandon hardly ever misses a practice, which is a great accomplishment seen as he travels from Sundre every single night to get to the Academy for practice.  Congratulations to Brandon Green for winning the ABA Player of the Month for December 2014!

The Absolute Baseball Academy is proud to name the Player of the Month for November 2014 as Marcus Coderre.

Marcus is currently on the Bantam team and plays shortstop and pitcher for them and is a team leader not only on the field, but off the field as well.  Marcus never misses a day of training and has improved tremendously since the program has gone indoors.  He is the true definition of the term "leader" and displays it every night in the Academy.  Congratulations to Marcus on a job well done!!

The Boys played teams from Gatineau, QC, Brampton, ON, Toronto, ON and Florida teams from Bradenton and Tampa. Pitching was the key ingredient in their success down there as well as playing hard for every game. They were also able to see The Blue Jays play in Dunedin while there as well.  It shows how hard the players all worked during the winter when they can go down and win as many as the team did. ABA Partners with Baseball Jamaica

While visting Jamaica, the Gidney family had the honour of meeting Gary Gisewell and his team from Baseball Jamaica.

The major purpose of Baseball Jamaica is to focus on troubled and underprivileged children in Jamaica and steer them towards sports. The children of Jamaica are the primary focus; but organizing several baseball leagues and engaging in actual competition is paramount. The youth occupied with sports, especially in Jamaica, in this time, offers nothing but social positives in a climate where despair and boredom transforms to crime and violence. Baseball activities foster discipline, civic pride, physical and psychological development, challenge, enjoyment, self-expression, and effective communication.  On behalf of ABA, we were happy to be able to donate some gloves and balls as well as a monetary donation.  We look forward to a long and strong relationship with Baseball Jamaica.  To view the article in the Jamaica Gleaner Newspaper:  follow this link: http://jamaica-gleaner.com/extra/pdf/  Nov. 14 - 20 Edition, Page E5.
